So make note that Feburary 7-14 is the week to spread awareness of congenital heart defects. It is estimated that up to 40,000 babies are born each year in the U.S. with congenital heart defects. That's a astounding number of babies! Despite these statistics, newborns and teen-aged athletes are NOT routinely screened for Congenital Heart Defects. Many cases of death in young teen athletes are caused by undiagnosed CHD's and Childhood Onset Heart Disease.
